Sysprep Failure

I build a machine and I can successfully sysprep it one time. I've done this
twice and both times I've rebooted and I failed to get my CD to boot to run
imagex. (my issue).

I let the system rebuild and sit for a while, then I try to run sysprep
again and it fails immediately. Here is the error in setupact:

0f0073] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:Not running DLLs; either the machine is in an
invalid state or we couldn't update the recorded state, dwRet = 31
Info
[0x0f004c] SYSPRP WaitThread:Exiting spawned waiting thread
Error
[0x0f0042] SYSPRP WinMain:One of the sysprep phases failed, all further
execution halted; dwRet = 31

Has anyone seen this issue? I've googled everthing I can think of and come
up with nothing.

try closeing all running processes and removing any unnessary hardware
before running sysprep.

Even though you are probably trying to sysprep as a local admin try this...
Right click on the command prompt icon and select "run as administrator"
Type the command "C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\sysprep.exe"
Select your desired options in the newly opened window.

Sysprep Failure

I tried stopping every process and service that did not lead to a blue
screen, or to a system failure, and then Sysprepping, the error still occurs
though. As for unnecesary hardware, everything is onboard on the machine, so
that should not be an issue.

I do have UAC turned off, though I am not sure that should make a
difference. I am trying to sysprep a base Enterprise/Ultimate (tried
both)install with only WinZip and Acrobat Reader Installed.

It works without the /generalize switch. In order to use the Enterprise
version and KMS I need to use the /generalize switch right? Because if I
don't actually need to use that switch than I won't worry about it.

I tried that and it did not work. I am assuming that other people have
actually performed an install of Vista Ent, and had it sysprep with
"Generalize" Successfully? I guess I will try it next with a basic install
and nothing changed at all. Just install, and then sysprep it.

I tried to sysprep the GX620 by installing Vista Ent from scratch, and then
letting it perform its own auto updates. I then rebooted the system, and
attempted to perform the Sysprep, the same problem occurs.

Hello Corey,
Normally that error occurs when rearm has happened three times already with
that image.
Are you entering the product key or using the default product key for the
enterprise edition?
Are you entering a MSDN Retail key for the Windows Ultimate version?
Where did you get these image downloads?
Thanks,

Hello Corey,
No you shouldn't need to download again. Nothing in that process sounds
incorrect and I don't see a multiple people having the same issue so I
don't suspect and issue with the downloads.
Are you setting anything in an unattended file with regards to a product
key? You shouldn't have to but an unattended setting may come into play.
The Enterprise has a generic key that should be fine for 30 days until it
locates a KMS server or is changed to a MAK key.
Thanks,

Sysprep Failure

I am not using any unattended files at all. Just a straight install. It
appears that the Enterprise download is different sized between eOpen and
MSDN. I am going to try downloading the versions from MSDN on the hope that
it helps.

Would it make a difference if I am using a PC that has been activated with
other installs of Windows VIsta? For instance I set everything up on this
PC, and then give the HDDs to the end users after complete setup (including
activation).

Though these errors I am getting are on a clean install. I am going to try
another model system as well, maybe it is system specific.

Thanks for the help, and any other ideas would be great.

Sysprep Failure

For those interested, the same DVD, and the same process was successful using
a Dell SC430.

I was successful on the GX620 with the x64 Ent Vista though.

Perhaps there is an issue with the Dell Optiplex GX620 and Sysprep. Anyone
successfully Generalize one of them on x86 Ultimate or Enterprise?
