Imovie and Analog-to-Digital conversion with Sony DCR-TRV330 | |||

Hi, I have something on VHS that I'd like to get into iMovie. My camcorder supports analog-to-digital conversion, and I have followed all instructions in its manual regarding settings (camera in VCR mode, A/V to DV IN enabled) and connections (camera to computer via FireWire, camera to VCR with supplied AV cable. However, iMovie does not seem to be cooperating. All I get is black. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a feature my hardware supports that iMovie does not? Thanks in advance for all input. -Will |

If you're using a VHS Player with front connectors, try the rear VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT. The front VIDEO/AUDIO in my Panasonic is only IN. Hope this helps. |

There are a number of things it could be: 1) Some cameras won't do a pass-through if there is a tape inside 2) Have you set your camera's VTR setting to "Play" so that the signal will be transmitted? 3) If the above are okay, it could be a bad cable connection. 4) If all else fails, record to a miniDV tape and then import that. There could still be some other setting you need to make on your camcorder. If your camcorder supports passthrough, iMovie handles it just fine (it doesn't know or care where its FireWire data fix originates). -- Spenser |

I succeeded in doing this with a Canon ZR40 and iMovie both 2 and 3. I had to remove the tape and switch one parameter in the Canon memory. I have the same camera as you and I have no trouble importing into iMovie. I have imported with both OS9 and OSX. However I have not tried to import VHS into the camcorder and pass it on through to the computer. I know you are supposed to be able to do this, it is just that I have not tried it. I think there is going to be a generation loss anyhow(although not too bad in this case), so why don't you record the VHS onto DV and then into iMovie? cduke ----------------------- In article <bd55lo$6j2$1 (~=~) news.Stanford.EDU, Jon Claerbout <jon.DeleteThis (~=~) pangea.Stanford.EDU wrote: I succeeded in doing this with a Canon ZR40 and iMovie both 2 and 3.
