Extract Doom Marine Face Sprite? | |||

Hi there, This is probably not the right place to ask, but I guess it is a good start. All of you will i'm sure remember that one of the nicest touches to the original doom game was the marines "portrait" that appeared on your HUD - beginning with a maniacal smile, crazy red eyes in god mode and descending into a bloody mess as more and more aliens pounded on you. Well I am feeling artistic and kind of wanted to do a whole monkey to human progression type evolution picture, but with the doom faces rather than the monkeys and humans. Trouble is with a cursory search on google I am struggling to find a premade collection of the pictures. Does anyone know an easy way to extract the marine face avatars / sprites from the original WAD files from Doom II? Any help you can offer in this regard is massively appreciated. I did consider Print Screening the different states, but I am not sure how many different states there are, and print screen is not a guranteed quality - where as a source picture would be the original... thanks in advance! |

In Doom1.wad (shareware), Doom.wad (DOOM) and Doom2.wad (DOOM II) all the status bar graphics are lumps named ST*, and the face graphics in particular are named STF*. With XWE and WinTex you can press the Gfx button so that the WAD browser will display graphics only, making it easier to find the face graphics. You'll see there's a button for sprites as well, but the face isn't really categorized as a sprite (in DOOM sprites are technically the things you see moving in the levels or decorating them, as well as the marine's hands and weapons in hand). |

I'm pretty sure that a number of the WAD editing utilities provided the ability to extract graphics from WAD files. I remember doing it using one of the tools in the xwadtools collection - it might've been DeuTex, but my memory might be faulty. All the xwadtools stuff is source code, so you'll have to compile it yourself. I don't know what platform you're using, but I don't remember having any problems with compiling it on Linux. If your setup is lacking a C compiler and you can't be bothered with installing one, then I think there are pre-compiled versions of DeuTex and WinTex (the Windows port of DeuTex) floating around on download sites. You might find the DoomWorld downloads page handy: http://www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/utils/editors.php Good luck with your project. I will try looking for a WAD editor when I get back from the office. Just out of interest, does anyone have any information in what WAD's / where the HUD srpites are located. It would help a great deal if I didn't have to trawl through doom II's entire sprite library. |
