It started yesterday.... about every 5 minutes I get a small black screen pop up. It doesn't stay. Just appears then disappears. I've run updated Ad-adaware, Spybot, 3 different online virus scans etc... but to no avail. Any suggestions? . |

I've only seen something similar to what you've described once. It was on a computer that had McAfee VirusScan installed and set to automatically check for updates. To make a long story short, there were multiple outdated entries in the Scheduled Tasks folder. Once they were deleted, the problem stopped. That said, here's what I'd do if it was my computer. The next time you see the black box (it's called a command prompt window) pop up, write down the time that your computer displays in the lower right corner of your monitor (don't rely on any other time source). Record at least three instances of this happening. Go to Start -> Run and type eventvwr.msc in the Open box and click OK. This will start the Event Viewer. In the left hand pane select Application. See if there are any entries in the right hand pane that correspond with the times you recorded earlier. Any entries that are listed as Warning or Error would be worth investigating. Do the same for the System entry in the left pane. Next, open Control Panel and double click Scheduled Tasks. (Note: If you see a page with "Pick a Category" up top, select Performance and Maintenance. The Scheduled Tasks icon will at the bottom). In the Scheduled Tasks window select Advanced on the toolbar at the top. Select View log from the menu that drops down. Once again, see if there are any entries whose time matches the pop ups. Post back if you find any matches. -- Nepatsfan "Lady In Need" <LadyInNeed (~=~) discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A88CAC7C-E093-4529-9D1A-608E3606DEB8 (~=~) microsoft.com... > Please??? > > "Lady In Need" wrote: > >> Anyone????? >> >> "Lady In Need" wrote: >> >>> It started yesterday.... about every 5 minutes I get a >>> small black screen >>> pop up. Okay.... I think you're onto something. :) They command prompt box is coming up every 5 minutes like clockwork. The scheduled tasks was set up a bit different from you described, but I found it under Advanced then View Log and it's the Symantec Net Detective that is coming up every 5 minutes. Here's what it says: "Symantec NetDetect.job" (NDETECT.EXE) Started 2/28/2005 7:43:00 AM "Symantec NetDetect.job" (NDETECT.EXE) Finished 2/28/2005 7:43:01 AM Result: The task completed with an exit code of (0). Something doesn't look right. I opened my Scheduled Tasks folder and only 4 things were there. Icon: Add Scheduled Task Icon: Norton Antivirus Scan my computer Then it has when to run it and then the status says 'Could not start' Icon: Norton System Works One Button Checkup Then when to run it etc.. and then the status says 'Could not start' Symantec NetDetec Schedule every 5 min Now with the Nortons... if it didn't run that's not good right? On the task bar it shows 'auto protect enabled' But the weird thing is I can't open my Norton's! Not from the taskbar, or programs or desktop. I couldn't find anything with Allison's name and her account is still on the computer. SO... since I couldn't find any of those things I went to your second suggestion. There's only the One NetDetec icon as I mentioned above. I changed it to 10 minutes. And it changed... but guess what? It changed back on its own to 5 minutes!! I thought I did something wrong so I did it a second time. And after clicking Apply it showed to check it every 10 minutes. But then a couple minutes later I looked back in the folder and it said 5 minutes? This is driving me nuts! lol "Nepatsfan" wrote: > Here's what to do to test if NetDetect is causing your problem: > > It looks like an account for a user named Allison was deleted > from your computer. First off, make sure you've logged on to Windows with an account that has administrative privileges. If you can't change the time from 5 to 10 minutes in the properties box then you could try disabling it temporarily. The best way to do that would be from within Norton Antivirus. Once you've done that come back to the Scheduled Tasks folder and right click the NetDetect icon, select Properties and on the Task tab uncheck the Enabled box. Having only the 4 items in your Scheduled Tasks folder is fine. Having "Could not start" in the status column may or may not be a problem. See what is listed in the Last result column. If it's 0x0 you should be OK. Check Advanced -> View log and make sure that the Norton Antivirus scan is being run as scheduled. If the task bar shows auto protect enabled, you should be fine. -- Nepatsfan "Lady In Need" <LadyInNeed (~=~) discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5D27646C-C9AC-4123-93CC-CB4CC3DBB8AA (~=~) microsoft.com... > Something doesn't look right.
